More enjoyable trip to Hachimantai and Appi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan

Hiking in the Matsukawa Onsen Area

Matsukawa Onsen has been a beloved hot spring resort since the mid-Edo period (1603-1868). It is also the site of Japan's first geothermal power plant.
This region offers many places for nature lovers to explore, including untouched forests, wetlands, flower-filled meadows, and rock formations left by volcanic activity. Visitors can enjoy hiking from spring through fall, camping and stream fishing in summer, and skiing in winter.
Matsukawa Onsen is the starting point for three hiking courses heading over the mountains toward Mt. Genta, Mt. Mitsuishi, and Mt. Ubukura. Along the way, hikers can enjoy panoramic views from summits and ridges, as well as seasonal flower fields featuring blooming alpine plants.
This area is part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Please help keep it clean and orderly by following these simple rules:
  • The collection or destruction of plants is punishable by law.
  • To protect the flower beds and animal ecosystem within the park, please refrain from bringing pets.
  • Littering is prohibited within the park. All trash and waste should be taken out of the park for disposal.
  • For safety reasons, hikers are required to submit a hiking plan. Mountain weather can change suddenly. Hikers are encouraged to prepare for sudden cold or wet conditions.
