Autumn Morioka-Hachimantai 2 nights 3 days travel plan

Enjoy the beautiful fall colors of Hachimantai! Introducing activities for you to experience traditional Japanese folk art and culture.

Day 1 [Tokyo → Japan (Morioka, Iwate)]

On the first day, enjoy Wanko Soba in Morioka and take a stroll around Morioka City.
  1. Arrive at Morioka Station
  2. If you come to Iwate, you should try the Wanko Soba challenge. How many bowls can you eat? The challenge!
    On Saturdays, you can also enjoy the "Yoichi” street market held in Zaimokucho. (April through November)
  3. Overnight stay in Morioka.

Day2 [Morioka → Hachimantai]

Take the gondola to the summit at Appi Kogen Ski Resort, admire the autumn colors, and then return to experiencing traditional craft culture.
  1. Rent a car in front of the station and head for Hachimantai! (Takes about 45 minutes by car on the expressway)
  2. To Appi Kogen Ski ResortRide the gondola to the summit of Mt. Maemori, surrounded in the fall colors. It’s a beautiful beech forest. If you are lucky, you might get a view of a sea of clouds.
  3. Lunch at the Appi Grand Hotel (About a 20 minute drive)
  4. Why not experience traditional Japanese folk crafts at the Appi Lacquerware Studio?
    You may be captivated by the simple yet beautiful lacquerware boxes and glasses. Here, you can experience the lacquering of Appi lacquerware chopsticks and dessert plates. (Reservations required)
  5. Overnight stay in HachimantaiSpend the night at a lodging that has an attached hot spring bath.

Day3 [Hachimantai → Morioka]

Enjoy touring Hachimantai's best autumn foliage spots, famous throughout Japan.
  1. Matsuo Hachimantai Visitor Center (Tourist Information Center) Head to the summit via Hachimantai Aspite Line (about 30 minutes by car)
  2. Enjoy the magnificent view at the Hachimantai Summit Rest House on the border of Iwate and Akita prefectures. (about 25 minutes by car)
  3. Enjoy lunch at Matsukawa Hot Springs (about 10 minutes by car)
  4. Marvel at the beautiful contrast of autumn leaves and Matsukawa in the Matsukawa Gorge, surrounded by basalt. (Please be careful when parking) (about 1 minute by car)
  5. At the 'Forest Big Bridge' in Matsukawa Gorge, you can view the autumn leaves from above. (Please be careful when parking) (about 45 minutes by car on the highway)
  6. Return the rental car and enjoy Iwate's soul food. One of Morioka's three major noodles, Morioka Reimen is recommended.
