Matsukawa Warm Waterway

Here is a tranquil scene familiar to locals as the "Dan Dan Waterway."

The Matsukawa River in Hachimantai has an extremely low water temperature of 9°C to 27°C between May and September, when rice cultivation takes place. It was necessary to raise the water temperature for paddy rice, which is said to suffer from cold damage at temperatures below 17°C. The wide and shallow heated channel, 1300 m long, 20 m wide, and 0.45 m deep, has 35 steps to receive plenty of sunlight, and the water temperature is raised by exposing it to the air using the drop-offs.
The colors of the sky reflected on the surface of the water and the murmuring of the flowing water will remain in your mind as a soundscape.

*Heated waterways are agricultural waterways. It has a high volume of water and is much more dangerous than its calm appearance. Please do not enter the canal.

Meiji Centennial Park Small Hydroelectric Power Plant

The promenade of the Meiji Centennial Park continues along the heated waterway.
At the downstream end of the warm water channel is a large waterwheel, over 6 meters in diameter, which can be seen powerfully in motion between April and November.

This water turbine is a small hydroelectric power plant that utilizes the flow of the Matsukawa Warm Water Channel and has a maximum output of 9.9Kw. The electricity generated is supplied to an electric power company.
