Experience the majestic natural beauty of Matsukawa Valley firsthand.
A bridge spanning Matsukawa Valley, offering stunning views of its beautiful scenery throughout all four seasons. It is a popular viewpoint where visitors can take in the breathtaking landscape of the valley.
From the bridge, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the clear stream of the Matsukawa River flowing through the valley, surrounded by lush forests. Especially during the autumn foliage season, the vibrant red and yellow leaves create a stunning landscape that captivates visitors.
In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, while in summer, the varying shades of green in the forest create a mystical atmosphere. The cascading water from the erosion control dam adds a refreshing and cooling effect. Autumn, in particular, is one of the best times to visit, as the area is renowned as one of the top foliage spots in the prefecture. The vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges of beech and oak trees contrast stunningly with the emerald-green waters of the Matsukawa River, which takes on its unique hue due to the sulfur content from the nearby Matsukawa Onsen. Every year, many visitors come to witness this breathtaking scenery.
From the base of Mori-no-Ohashi, step onto the walking trail that leads to the riverbank, where a dramatic scene unfolds. Enjoy the striking contrast between the autumn leaves and the rugged, natural shapes of the rocks.
This bridge, a hidden local gem for autumn foliage, is closed to vehicle traffic but serves as a perfect spot to admire the stunning fall colors spread across the valley.
This impressive arch bridge, which has been closed to general traffic since its completion in 1985, can be reached by heading from Mori-no-Ohashi Bridge along Prefectural Road 212 toward Matsukawa Onsen. Continue straight at the junction where it connects with the Hachimantai Jukai Line.
This bridge is closed to all vehicles, including bicycles. However, with the development of a pedestrian-only hiking trail up to the Omatsukura Gate in Shizukuishi Town, Prefectural Road 212 (Shizukuishi-Hachimantai Line) was fully opened in 2007, connecting Hachimantai City and Shizukuishi Town.
Originally, this road was intended to be a scenic mountain route connecting the tourist destinations of Hachimantai City and Shizukuishi Town. However, after construction began, the plan was revised, and a decision was made to build a tunnel to preserve the natural environment. This led to a suspension of construction. Later, during an environmental survey for the tunnel project, the destruction of primeval forest was discovered, causing further issues. As a result, in 1996, Iwate Prefecture abandoned plans to resume construction.
From the start of construction in 1965, including a 12-year suspension period, a total of 33 years passed before the project was ultimately frozen indefinitely.
Reflect on the unique history of this prefectural road, shaped by Japan's rapid economic growth and the subsequent rise of environmental awareness. As you do, take in the untouched primeval forest stretching out beneath you.
Enjoy the rich natural beauty preserved from air pollution and environmental destruction, and if you're lucky, take in the breathtaking sight of a sea of clouds in the distance.
