Gozaisho-Numa Pond Walking Trail

The Gozaishonuma-Akanuma walking trail is a 1.5-kilometer-long hiking course that takes about 45 minutes one-way for an easy stroll. At the halfway point of the trail, there is the quiet "Gozaishonuma" and the beautiful "Akanuma," also known as "Goshikinuma," with small pavilions set up where visitors can take a break while enjoying the view of each pond. Why not spend a relaxing time while feeling nature?

As its alias "Goshiki-numa" suggests, Akanuma is a mysterious pond whose water changes color five times as the seasons change. In summer, the water changes from cloudy blue to bright blue and then to turquoise blue. In fall, it returns to cloudy blue again, and in winter and spring, it turns brown. This seasonal color change attracts many visitors.

Along the trail, a variety of wetland plants bloom from spring to mid-summer: Mizubashou (Asian skunk-cabbage) from April to July, Mitsukashiwa (Eupatorium japonicum) from May to August, and Watasuge (cotton grass) and Hime Rhododendron (Rhododendron arborescens) from June and July. In addition, the dainty blossoms of the akino-nagitsukami (Cerasus x yedoensis) bloom from July to August. In autumn, the leaves begin to change color, turning the landscape bright reds and oranges and attracting visitors.
Please note that there are no water or toilet facilities on the walking trail.
