Up in the Appi Highlands, an ancient beech forest was cut down, but then naturally grew back, becoming what is known as a secondary beech forest. When you look up at these beautiful trees, you can really feel the life force that runs through them.

Take a deep breathe and smell the crisp clean fragrance of the forest as you feel the sunlight filtering through gaps between the leaves high above.

In autumn when the leaves change color and fall, it is as if the ground is covered in a soft blanket. You can really experience this with all five of your senses.
*A “secondary forest” is one that originally grew in a given area, was weakened by deforestation or disaster, and has since naturally regenerated itself.

Soothe your Body and Mind in This Pristine Natural Area

The Appi Kogen Secondary Beech Forest is one of Japan's 100 Best Forests for Forest Bathing. Around the 1930s, the primary forests of Appi Kogen were extensively logged and used to produce charcoal, lacquerware, and other products. Large trees that could not be logged at the time remained, and saplings grew from the seeds that these trees dropped, gradually regenerating the forest. Today, a vast secondary beech forest has grown up, restoring the forest to its former beauty.

Take a walk along the promenade from the Appi Kogen Beech Station, and you’ll be able to enjoy the scenic beauty of the secondary beech forest. All of your senses will be engaged with the sun shining through the canopy, the sound of the breeze through the leaves, and the warm embrace of the earth under your feet. Spring and autumn are particularly stunning times to visit!
